In my classroom, I have adapted whole brain teaching. My five simple yet effective classroom rules include:
1. Follow directions quickly.
2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
4. Make smart choices.
5. Keep your dear teacher happy.
These rules use TPR (total physical response) to help students remember the rules of the classroom.
This style of teaching also incorporates a "class-yes" approach to calling the attention of the class.
When a student decides not to follow one of these rules, they will be given a warming and will be asked which rule they think they are violating. If this student precedes to violate a rule, they will be asked to write their name down in the daily planner. This planner is kept to keep a running record of students who violate rules (not completing homework will fall under "make smart choices"). Following the class, the student must meet individually with the teacher and depending on the severity of the situation, punishment will follow.
